dsc_0699Being a Repurposer by trade I am always excited when something wears out. I get to decide what it will become next! How much fun is that?! But sometimes the thing that is wearing out just needs to be repaired because it still have a long life ahead of it with just a little TLC.

We have two sets of high thread count sheets for our bed, both sets came to us second hand. I prefer these sheets to our $30 Big Box store Sheets, hands-down, because they are so much softer and don’t get all pilly. Of course these sheets have been worn and washed over and over, and finally both sets got rips in them. I thought about shredding the fabric, dying it and turning it into a rag rug or maybe lining a dress with the fabric.

But finally I decided that I should repair them instead. To replace these sheets I’d have to spend at least $60 a pair, and that isn’t worth adding some more scrap to my stash. I used the darning stitch on my machine and put on a patch of fine cotton for stability. I also noticed that the eyelet was coming loose, so I secured it on again with some embroidery for accent.

This article from How Stuff Works explains the way I mended these sheets in the eigth paragraph, it describes mending an L shaped tear. My machine does this automatically (nifty machine that it is) but if you follow the directions in the article you can replicate the process even on a machine that only does a straight stitch. Happy mending!
