dsc_05091Our weekly free paper has an extensive classified section which includes advertisements for local Tag Sales. I am a big fan of Tag and Estate Sales. We bought our couch and arm chair at one when we first moved into our home for a very reasonable price. The price for items is often a little higher than yard sales, but instead of hoping for the rare find, you are more than likely to find high quality furniture pieces and often whole matching sets.

We are looking for two furniture items to replace falling apart fiber-board pieces in our dining room and living room so I checked the paper last week to plan my Saturday morning. I did not find the pieces I was looking for, but I found some other unexpected treasures. At an Estate Sale run by a local company called Walker Liquidating I picked up some great vintage books for the girls to read/cut up and a few pieces of costume jewelry for myself. I walked out of the house spending only $13. I also met Stephen Walker, the owner of the company, and talked to him a little bit about his business.

dsc_05081He explained to me that Tag Sales are a great way for crafters to pick up supplies, especially on Sunday afternoons as the homeowner has discounted books, jewelry, buttons, fabrics, and sewing notions to extra low prices. He said you can often find sellers who will do a “fill a bag for $2″ push right before the sale closes. Also, Stephen encourages his sellers/homeowners to give away all of their magazine collections at no charge for the sake recycling them to people who will use them. I found shelves and shelves of National Geographic and Time magazines from the 60s, 70s and 80s which would make awesome art and craft materials.

The most helpful about Walker Liquidating companies website is that they list their future sales on the site. As well as posting photos of the large items that will be for sale at those shows. Since I am looking for particular items this year I am sure that I will be checking back on this site to keep an eye out for them. It will save me quite a bit of time searching when I can get a preview before I decide to visit a sale.
