I finally got the chance to try out Crafty Dame’s tutorial this rainy morning. I followed her directions, which were very clear and easy to follow, except I pleated the apron instead of gathering it. That was just my preference, but I think it would look fine either way. I just hate gathering seams. HATE it. I should get the nifty gathering presser foot that she mentions in her post. It might make my life easier.
I also made two aprons from the scraps for my girls. I let them each pick their own fabric for the pockets. Elise wanted the same veggie print as mine, and Liv picked the “flower garden” fabric. I did not use a pattern or anything for the girls’ aprons, and I have the waist straps fasten with velcro so they can put them on themselves.
The non-sheet fabric came from Whipstitch Fabrics, which I got on sale at the end of last month. I love them. I feel the opposite towards these fabrics as I do towards gathered seams. If you like the prints as well, the veggies are listed right here in her etsy store. The flower garden seems to be sold out, but I bet you could convo her and it might just not be listed.
Thanks for the kind shout-out, and LOVE what you did with the fabrics! I have more of both of those–just a teensy bit of the flower garden in the natural but piles of it in the green background, both under the search term “garden.”
And I just got a brand-new bolt of the veggies yesterday, mostly because I love it so much and never snagged any for myself!
Hope you and your girls love your aprons. Will have to hop over and check out that tute!
Thanks, Deborah. We will love our aprons. You’ll have to check back here next Wednesday because I have big plans for these aprons in a tutorial. I had a little revelation about what garden aprons need while I was picking lettuce for my salad a few days ago.
I have a quilt that my grandmother made for me when I was maybe 8 and it had that sheet as the back of the quilt. It’s weird to see that you have that fabric. It’s a fabric that has such a vivid spot in my memory. I still have that quilt- you may have seen it.
Yeah, that quilt was on the girls’ bed when we came for Andy’s Ordination.
You were with me when I bought that sheet. It was at the goodwill in Berkley Springs. Remember that day?
Oh yes, I do remember. It made a cute apron!
Next time we go on a trip, we need to bring our sewing machines!
Indeed we do.
they turned out super cute! i’m so glad the tutorial worked so well for you!
if you hate gathering, definitely put a gathering foot on your christmas list of something. they’re kinda pricey, especially if you have to buy a name brand one (i had to, to fit my brother machine) but they save you SO MUCH time. i’d been wanting one for years, but it wasn’t until i made last year’s halloween costume with a million ruffles (http://craftydame.blogspot.com/2008/10/happy-halloween.html) that i finally caved and bought one. i don’t know how i survived without it!
Oh my! That costume was definitely worth a gathering foot. It is also ADORABLE!
The last time I made myself a costume was when my husband and I were engaged and I was Alice in Wonderland. I made him be the Mad Hatter. Ha! Poor guy.
I just made one and added it to the group. So easy and fun. My apron is REALLY soft, like old sheets. I love it.
