Styrofoam Turntable?

This post is for my budding DJ brother-in-law, Mike. He is in the process of building his kit of music equipment for his band “Last Minute.” (Do you have a MySpace or Facebook Page, Mike?) He told me that he thought of crafting as “making noodle necklaces and stuff,” to which I replied, “That’s why I write a craft blog and you don’t.”
Well gizmowatch posted something from Teenage Engineering that I bet Mike would try to make. It is apparently just conceptual at this time, but a person with a little ingenuity could make one I’m sure! Mike, you buy the materials and we’ll try to put one together.

Well, Devona I think this is really cool. I don’t know how efficient it is, but it certainly looks nifty.
The only problem with it is that it’s Belt Drive. All the books I’ve read say one thing DON’T BUY BELT DRIVE, BUT DIRECT DRIVE. Belt drive is operated by that rubber belt and it turns the platter which turns the record. The problem with that is that the timing wavers, and it’s impossible to scratch. But with Direct Drive it’s operated with a motor, and that is the best. You can scratch with Direct Drive and the timing never fails.
But, I didn’t expect it to be this really top of the line thing.
Do you want me to buy $50 worth of craft materials, so you can try to make one for me? Or do you want me to make one? Or buy one myself?
Well, Mike. You should just figure out how to make one with a Direct Drive.
Then you can give the prototype to Teenage Engineering and make your first cool million.
