These baskets were imported from Indonesia. It came from a small town called Bantul, Yogyakarta Province. Surrounding Bantul, there are many handcrafters who produce these range as I do. Actually, we have already developed the material into something new. Currently, we use candy paper as main substance for basket making. No kidding, just check out here http://www.facebook.com/pages/Any-Think-Green-Product/160161437368673

So funny that when I finally thought to search for Pier 1 newspaper basket I found someone looking for the same thing I have been!!!! I purchased them as well- and immediately thought how badly I wanted to make them myself!! I've looked on youtube and other sites and find baskets aaaalllmost like them- but none ever have that solid sturdy look they do.....or the deep shape!!! I think from staring at it long enough it seems that there is 1 very long (probably "tubes" that have been attached to one another) newspaper tube that interweaves throughout the whole bottom....idk!!!

if you ever do find a way to do it or a tutorial- please do email it to me!

I have a pretty major surgery coming up- and will have quite awhile to recover- so it seems to be a perfect project to take my mind off the pain : )

Take care!
