img_37471I’ve been busy saving eggshells, and slowly I’m developing a small collection of them for the eggshell planters idea I found a couple weeks ago.  Here’s what I learned from the process.

I love the look of brown eggs instead of white, and all the eggs were on sale near Easter, so that’s a great time to buy.  I got organic brown eggs for half off!  Devona also suggested using dyed eggs, which would be so cute with colorful flowers.

The tutorial said to use a utility knife or sharp kitchen knife.  I tried an exacto knife & liked the smaller blade.  I also added 2 drainage holes in the bottom of each egg.    I used a nut pick & just tapped gently in the same spot a couple times, but you could also use an exacto knife or anything else sharp & pointy.

I decided to begin seeds in other containers.  Then when the sprouts were large enough I transfered them to the eggshells.   I’m keeping the eggshell planters in a plastic container until I’m ready to gift them.  Then I’ll transfer them to the pretty cardboard containers.  They look much more earthy.

Another update:  I read in Back Home Magazine (mar/apr 2009) that you should crack the shells & remove the bottoms before planting.
