Last spring while cleaning out the space behind my garage I found the original sink to the upstairs bathroom. It was upside down and filled with nasty water breeding mosquitos. On a whim I put it in the front yard garden bed to use as a planter. Rather than plant one thing in it, I swapped out potted plants that were seasonal to keep a splash of color in the garden all season. It was also helpful to have potted plants in the sink as when there were really heavy rains there wasn’t enough drainage with only the one drain hole to keep from drowning the plants so I could bring the plants up on the porch before big storms.
I love the surprise element of using non-standard items for gardening. My mother uses a wine barrel to plant marigolds, and I’ve seen people plant in claw foot tubs before. As long as the scale of the item fits with the rest of the garden it makes a confident and unique statement in your garden. What kinds of out of the ordinary items do you use for gardening? What reaction do you get from neighbors when they see it in your yard?
